Sterling is just a regular guy! They work at the GUILD and have dedicated gears life to seeking perfection and the pursuit of progress. He works often but you never really see them get dirty. 
Another noticeable thing is he wears brown gloves with long sleeve shirts. No skin below gears neck is ever shown. Nobody quite knows what Sterling does, as gear never really interacts with any of the other workers. People just know it’s there.
